Overview
OpenShift Virtualization puts VMs and containers on the same Kubernetes based platform, which changes the operational model on its own. Instead of managing separate stacks, you run mixed workloads in one highly dynamic environment, and resiliency has to be integrated to the same degree.
The first major change is unified protection across workload types. Traditional environments treat VM backup and container backup as separate problems. In OpenShift Virtualization both have to be protected together, and cloud native data protection platforms do this by capturing an application across its VMs and containers as one unit.
The second change is that automation becomes the default. OpenShift already relies heavily on automation for deployment and scaling, and data protection follows the same pattern: policies define backup, failover and recovery, and the platform runs them automatically. Teams depend less on manual work during incidents.
Disaster recovery is also built in. Recovery workflows live inside the platform instead of in external DR tooling, which gives faster failover and more consistent recovery, especially in complex environments.
Migration gets easier as well. Organizations moving off traditional virtualization platforms need their workloads protected as soon as they arrive. Integrated data protection closes that gap by making migration and protection part of the same workflow.
Continuous readiness improves resiliency further. Systems stay in a state where recovery can happen quickly and usually with little disruption, so teams are not left preparing for a failure after it has happened.
Scalability and consistency matter too. Because everything runs on Kubernetes principles, the same protection policies apply across clusters and environments, which avoids fragmentation and keeps operations simpler.
There is a strategic effect as well. With virtualization and cloud native protection on one platform, resilience becomes part of daily operations instead of a separate process.
In short, resiliency now means designing systems that are always ready to recover, automatically and consistently, instead of restoring them after they fail.
