    Overview

    Cloud providers do offer infrastructure-level protection, but they typically do not provide application-aware backup. That means they can help keep the platform running, but they do not guarantee that your applications, configurations, and data can be fully restored in a usable state. In OpenShift, that distinction matters because applications are made up of multiple interdependent components.

    Another gap is incomplete coverage. Cloud-native applications include not just data volumes, but also metadata, container images, Kubernetes objects, and configurations. Without capturing all of these together, recovery becomes partial. You may restore storage but still need to manually rebuild the application environment.

    There is also a recovery speed problem. Native cloud mechanisms are not designed for fast, application-level recovery. In a real incident, slow or incomplete recovery directly translates into downtime, which is often more expensive than the infrastructure itself.

    Multi-cloud and hybrid environments add another layer of complexity. Many organizations run OpenShift across AWS, Azure, IBM Cloud, and on-prem environments. Cloud-native protection tools are usually tied to a single provider. That makes it difficult to maintain consistent protection and recovery workflows across environments.

    Operationally, built-in tools lack centralized control and automation. Teams need policy-driven backup, automated scheduling, and visibility across clusters. Without that, protection becomes inconsistent and hard to scale.

    Security is another concern. Basic cloud protections do not always include features like immutability or ransomware-focused safeguards at the application level. That leaves gaps in modern threat scenarios.

    The practical takeaway is simple.

    Cloud platforms keep infrastructure available.

    They do not guarantee application recoverability.

    That is why organizations layer cloud-native, Kubernetes-aware data protection on top. It ensures that everything-data, metadata, and application state-can be restored quickly and consistently, regardless of where the workload runs.
