Proxmox VE 9.1 Released – OCI Containers, TPM Snapshots & Kernel 6.17

Proxmox VE 9.1 brings major enhancements including OCI container support for LXC, TPM state snapshots in qcow2 format, fine-grained nested virtualization controls, and the new stable Linux Kernel 6.17. Built on Debian 13.2 "Trixie" with QEMU 10.1.2, LXC 6.0.5, ZFS 2.3.4, and Ceph Squid 19.2.3.

This release continues Proxmox's commitment to enterprise-grade, open-source virtualization with seamless upgrade path from Proxmox VE 8.4.

    Key Highlights in Proxmox 9.1

Create LXC containers from OCI images. Download from registries or upload manually. Full system containers and application containers (tech preview) supported.

Virtual TPM state can now be stored in qcow2 format, enabling snapshots of VMs with TPM on file-level storages like NFS or CIFS shares.

New vCPU flag enables nested virtualization on specific CPU types without exposing all host CPU flags. Great for Windows VBS or nested hypervisors.

Local bridges and VNets show connected guests. EVPN zones report learned IPs/MACs. Fabrics now in resource tree with routes, neighbors, and interfaces.

    📱 Improved Mobile Interface

The Proxmox VE mobile interface receives significant updates in 9.1:

    • OpenID Connect (OIDC) realm login support
    • VM hardware and options show pending changes
    • Edit VM options directly from mobile
    • Improved mobile Firefox detection

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the use of Proxmox?

Proxmox Virtual Environment is an open‑source platform used to run and manage virtual machines and Linux containers through a single web interface, mainly for server virtualization and lab or production clusters.

    Is Proxmox really free?

The Proxmox VE software is free and open source under the AGPL license, and you can use it legally with the no‑subscription repository, but paid subscriptions are offered for access to enterprise repositories and commercial support.

Is Proxmox the same as VMware?

Proxmox and VMware ESXi/vSphere are both hypervisor platforms, but Proxmox is open source and combines KVM and LXC, while VMware is proprietary, more ecosystem‑focused, and licensed per subscription or CPU.

    Is N100 enough for Proxmox?

Intel N100 mini‑PCs can run Proxmox for light home‑lab use, such as a few low‑resource VMs or containers, but they are limited in cores, RAM capacity, and I/O compared with full server‑grade hardware, so they do not suit heavy workloads.

What are the main advantages of using Proxmox?

Key advantages include a web‑based management UI, support for both VMs and containers, built‑in high‑availability and backup features, and relatively low total cost of ownership compared with many commercial virtualization stacks.
