Snapshots vs Backups in Virtual Machine Data Protection

A snapshot captures the state of a virtual machine at a specific point in time and records the changes made after that moment, much like a checkpoint. Because it mainly tracks incremental changes, it is quick to create and uses little storage at first. Snapshots suit short term needs such as testing, patch validation or temporary rollback during development, and recovering from one is nearly instant, so administrators can revert quickly when something goes wrong. The drawback is that snapshots live alongside the original data. If the primary storage fails, the snapshots are lost with it, and keeping several snapshots over time can use a lot of production storage and affect performance.

Backups create independent copies of data that can sit on separate media, including remote or cloud locations. They can be full, incremental or differential, which allows flexible protection strategies, and they are designed for long term retention and disaster recovery. Backing up and restoring usually takes longer than working with snapshots, but backups hold up much better against hardware failures, corruption or incidents that affect a whole site.

Snapshots are best for fast, short term rollback within the same environment. Backups give you complete, portable and durable protection for long term recovery.
