Fixing the “Virtual Machine Disk Consolidation Is Needed” Alert

It happens most often after backup jobs that use temporary snapshots, when the datastore runs short of space during a snapshot deletion, when snapshot files are locked, when the management server loses connectivity to the host, or when there are simply too many snapshots. Left alone, those delta files keep growing and drag down both VM performance and your storage capacity.

Start with the built-in consolidation option. In the management client, right-click the affected VM, go to Snapshots and choose Consolidate. That merges the redundant delta files back into the base disk.

If Consolidate is missing or greyed out, create a new temporary snapshot and then choose "Delete All" in the snapshot manager, which forces the system to merge the existing delta disks. Trickier cases with invisible or orphaned snapshots can need deeper work, such as editing the configuration file and reloading the VM.

Back the VM up before you consolidate, so a mistake does not cost you data. Managing snapshots properly and leaving enough datastore space is what keeps the alert from coming back.
