Red Hat Summit 2025 Trends in Data Protection, AI and Virtualization

Start with virtualization and the platform shift. OpenShift Virtualization is gaining real momentum as an alternative to traditional hypervisors, which means enterprises are rebuilding their entire platform stack as they migrate workloads. Data protection therefore has to move from VM-level backup to platform-native protection that covers VMs and containers together.

Automation is converging too. The integration of tools like Ansible and Terraform points in one direction: infrastructure, operations and policies are becoming fully automated, and data protection is expected to follow the same model. Backup policies, recovery workflows and compliance controls are turning from manual tasks into part of infrastructure as code and automated pipelines.

AI adds another layer. The conversation is moving from using AI for analytics to using it for operational decisions. In data protection, that means better anomaly detection, faster incident response and recovery strategies that adapt. The aim goes beyond storing backups to improving resilience as conditions change.

Zero-touch recovery also got a lot of attention. Sessions covered fully automated failover and recovery scenarios where systems recover without human intervention. That is a big change from traditional disaster recovery, which often depends on people carrying out manual steps under pressure.

Resilience at scale was another trend. Case studies, especially from telecom, described environments where downtime is unacceptable and systems must recover instantly across distributed infrastructure. That pushes data protection toward continuous recovery models and near-zero RTO architectures.

Community and ecosystem play a part as well. Open source collaboration speeds up how these capabilities develop and fit together, and solutions are being built to work across platforms, clouds and vendors in place of isolated tools.

Across all these signals, data protection is changing in parallel with the infrastructure instead of reacting to it afterward. As AI, automation and virtualization reshape the platform, data protection is becoming automated, intelligent and built directly into that platform, and that is where the industry is heading.
