    Overview

    Traditional VLANs are limited to 4096 segments, which restricts scalability in large data centers. VXLAN overcomes this limitation with a 24-bit VXLAN Network Identifier (VNI), supporting up to 16 million isolated logical networks. This makes it ideal for multi-tenant cloud environments where network segmentation and scalability are critical.

    VXLAN operates using an underlay and overlay model. The underlay is the existing physical Layer 3 network responsible for routing IP traffic. On top of this sits the overlay network, where virtual Layer 2 segments are created. VXLAN Tunnel Endpoints (VTEPs) encapsulate and decapsulate traffic between virtual machines across hosts. Each VTEP uses its physical IP address to establish VXLAN tunnels.

    This architecture decouples the virtual network from the physical infrastructure. Administrators can design tenant networks without being constrained by physical switch configurations. It simplifies VM mobility, enhances isolation between tenants, and reduces MAC address learning pressure on physical switches.
