Overview
The first challenge is mixed workloads. You are running VMs and containers together on the same Kubernetes platform, and they behave differently, live for different lengths of time and have different dependencies. Traditional tools handle each kind separately, which leaves gaps. Cloud-native data protection captures both as one application context, so a recovery does not fall apart between layers.
The second is migration pressure. Many organizations are moving from VMware to OpenShift Virtualization, and the migration itself is risky enough. What happens after the move is the part people miss: until protection is in place, those workloads are exposed. There is also a gap in recovery expectations. Teams expect recovery to be fast because Kubernetes platforms are built for speed and resilience. Cloud-native approaches give you quicker recovery workflows, often automated, which is what people expect from the platform.
Adoption friction is subtler. OpenShift Virtualization is usually part of a bigger modernization effort, and data protection that is complicated or sits off to one side slows the whole thing down. Integrated tools fit into the Kubernetes workflows and tooling teams already use.
Consistency is another concern. In a distributed environment it is hard to be sure backups are complete and synchronized across clusters. Cloud-native protection gives you application-consistent backups, so the data and the configuration do not drift apart.
Then there is what comes next. Organizations adopting OpenShift are preparing for hybrid setups, multiple clouds and workloads that keep changing, so data protection has to allow for that from the start.
The pattern is clear. OpenShift Virtualization brings agility and consolidation, and cloud-native data protection is what keeps that agility from costing you recoverability. Without it you have a modern platform whose resilience is still stuck in the old world.
