Why are people moving away from Docker?

Docker is still widely used, especially for local development. But in production, many teams now prioritize Kubernetes-native runtimes and alternative desktop tooling.

Reasons include Docker Desktop licensing for larger organizations, security preferences, and operational standardization around runtimes like containerd and CRI-O. In many environments, the shift is not away from containers, but toward different container interfaces and runtimes.

In short: containers are still central. The ecosystem around how teams build, run, and orchestrate them is what continues to evolve.
